Electroencephalogram

Conventional electroencephalogram: It allows to record the electrical activity of the brain in the waking state. Electrodes are placed on the patient’s head, which are incorporated into a mesh, to which conductive gel is applied. It is a painless test with no side effects and no age limit. The collaboration of the patient is required through different maneuvers: opening and closing the eyes, rapid breathing, stimulation with light. The duration of the test is approximately 30 minutes.

Electroencephalogram with sleep deprivation: An electroencephalogram is performed first thing in the morning, having performed sleep deprivation the night before (without having slept). The duration of the test is 60-90 minutes during which the patient remains awake at the beginning of the test following the instructions of the staff.

• Avoid caffeine during the day: it can affect the results.
• Take your usual medications, unless instructed otherwise.
• Wash your head beforehand and do not use products, such as conditioners, gel and hairspray, as they can make it difficult for the electrodes to adhere to the scalp.
• If your doctor tells you to, you may need to sleep less or avoid sleeping the night before so you can sleep during the EEG.
