What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer is a disease that originates when malignant cells form in the tissues of the prostate.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. The disease tends to grow very slowly, and in its early stages, it often progresses silently. That’s why it’s crucial to undergo urological examinations periodically, starting from the age of 40.

Risk factors

There are several risk factors that can contribute to the development of this disease:

– Age: The likelihood of developing prostate cancer increases with age, particularly from the age of 50 onwards.

– Race/Ethnicity: Various studies indicate that certain racial and ethnic characteristics are risk factors. For instance, the incidence rate has been found to be higher in black men.

– Hereditary factor: Having a close relative (such as a father or brother) with prostate cancer is a significant factor, as a hereditary link has been identified. However, it is not always the case, as most prostate cancers occur in men without a family history of this cancer.

Warning signs and symptoms, when to see the urologist?

– Urinary problems:

  • Difficulty starting or stopping the flow of urine.
  • Frequent need to urinate, especially at night.
  • Feeling unable to completely empty the bladder.

– Pain or discomfort:

  • Pain or burning sensation during urination.
  • Bone pain, especially in the lower back, hips, or pelvis.
  • Discomfort in a testicle or scrotum.

– Changes in urinary patterns:

  • Blood in the urine or semen.
  • Painful ejaculation.

– Other symptoms:

  • Erectile dysfunction.
  • Unexplained weight loss.
  • Increase in scrotal size.

Detecting prostate cancer early is crucial for any future treatment. It has been proven that early detection significantly increases cure rates and prevents collateral damage. Prostate cancer is one of the most common diseases that can be effectively treated if diagnosed in a timely manner.
